This is an outstanding instruction book, specifically for alto clarinet, which teaches a beginning instrumentalist all of the basic skills necessary to play the instrument. The book features 180 short songs and etudes, which are used to learn new notes, rhythms and styles, as well as to reinforce the previously-learned material. There are also several band arrangement songs, in addition to a concert piece (with piano accompaniment included) and two like-instrument duets. As an added bonus, this book also features sixteen etudes from the famous Rubank method books, seventy-two one-measure rhythm patterns, and a one page guide to creating music.

Add all of this music to short lessons on music history and music theory, include a fingering chart, throw in a compact disc that provides accompaniments for lessons 1 - 58, and you have a book that is clearly the best in its class. We are recommending this book (and the optional 3 CD set which accompanies lessons 59 to the end of the book) for all beginning instrumentalists, regardless of age.

Rico Clarinet Reeds - Strength 2
Rico Clarinet Reeds - Strength 2
Item number 2060026DN, $11.95

The standard Rico reed is the type of reed that we recommend for most beginning students. The reeds are good quality, without being too pricey. As with all of our reeds, all boxed reeds are at least 10% off list price, and can not be returned.

Reeds are typically available in strengths of 1 through 5 (some brands label their reeds as Soft, Medium Soft, ... through Hard). In general, the lower the number, the easier it is to play most notes. The down side, is that the lower number reeds just don't sound as nice, and make it harder to hit high notes.

As a general rule, we recommend reeds with a strength of 2 (Soft) for people just getting started, and strength 2 1/2 (Medium Soft) for people who have played for a year (less time if they take lessons). The harder reeds should only be used after using the next softer size of reed for six months to a year, or at the recommendation of a private instructor or band director.
